Mobile Clinic in San Martín Jilotepeque, Guatemala - IN PROGRESS (2025)

This year we’re launching a project that goes beyond coffee—it’s about health, dignity, and access. The School That Coffee Built is partnering with local organizations to bring essential healthcare directly to coffee-growing families in San Martín Jilotepeque, Chimaltenango, Guatemala.

Why This Matters

San Martín Jilotepeque is known for producing exceptional coffee. But behind every bag of beans are families facing daily challenges—especially when it comes to health. Many live in remote, mountainous areas, far from the nearest town, and only seek medical help in emergencies. Government clinics often lack consistent doctors, medicine, and dental services. The result? Treatable issues like respiratory illness, childhood malnutrition, and dental problems go unchecked.

Our goal: remove the barriers that keep these families from getting the care they deserve.

The Solution: A Mobile Clinic That Reaches Them

Building on the success of past temporary clinics, this project will fund a sustainable mobile clinic that brings medical and dental care straight to remote communities. We’re not just showing up once—we’re staying engaged with ongoing checkups, education, and support.

This mobile clinic will provide:

  • Basic medical care for families who can’t reach town

  • Dental checkups and hygiene education to prevent early tooth loss

  • Nutritional support to help children grow strong and healthy

A Community Facing Real Pressures

In this region, many small coffee producers—particularly women—are taking on more responsibility than ever. Migration has left many families without their primary breadwinners, and the remaining producers face a growing labor shortage. At the same time, they’re expected to maintain high-quality coffee production in a highly competitive market.

Without health, none of that is sustainable.

Powered by Collaboration

This project is possible thanks to our partners at UNEX Guatemala and local healthcare organizations who are stepping in with technical knowledge, financial support, and on-the-ground coordination.

Together, we’re building something that lasts—not just better harvests, but healthier lives.
